Oregon's Mark Hatfield: A senator and a gentleman

&Nbsp;Looking back over Mark Hatfield's remarkable public life makes one mourn not only the death of one of the greatest leaders in Oregon history, but also the passing of the political era in which he served.

Hatfield, who died Sunday at the age of 89,  was a senator of another time -- a better time -- in American politics, when a lawmaker was still admired for working across party lines and even for standing up to his own party and president on such epic issues as the war in Vietnam.

Look around: Where are the independent, gracious, courageous national leaders who dare to question the wars or the enormous spending on national defense, and demand that more be done to combat hunger, poverty and illness?

Where do you see elected officials -- in either major party -- who are equally passionate about supporting the timber industry and protecting wilderness and scenic gorges?

Moreover, where are those still willing to go to bat for major federal investments that can transform a place like Oregon Health & Science University into Portland's largest employer or launch a far-sighted transportation system such as Portland's light rail?

Over the five decades of the most compelling, far-reaching public life in Oregon history, Hatfield did all these things. As the first Oregon governor in the 20th century to serve two terms, from 1959-1967, he understood intuitively what people in this state valued, adopting the motto, "Payrolls and Playgrounds." He championed higher education, high-tech development and highway construction.

Hatfield was still governor when he began to speak out against the Vietnam War, over the objections of his top aides. It was a lonely stance: Only one other governor, George Romney of Michigan, opposed a resolution supporting the war.

Hatfield's kind of independence is no longer tolerated in Congress - partisan groups and fellow senators would howl for his removal as committee chairman. Over the past decade, Hatfield's health had suffered and he was seldom seen in public.

Oregon's Mark Hatfield: A senator and a gentleman

When Hatfield ran for the US Senate, his Democratic opponent, Robert Duncan, famously warned that Oregonians could choose to fight the communists in the buffalo grass of Vietnam or the rye grass of Oregon. Oregonians didn't see the choice that way.
