2011 REWIND: Maricopa's biggest news for the year that was, Countdown

In Maricopa, a herd of candidates dipped their toe in the pool with three council seats and the mayor’s position on the line, but ultimately only four – Marvin Brown, Bridger Kimball, Rosalin Sanhadja and Leon Potter – submitted the necessary paperwork to run for council, with Maricopa Meadows HOA president Christian Price and councilmember Carl Diedrich left to go head-to-head for the mayor’s spot. That mayor’s seat has been held for two terms by Anthony Smith, who, like his predecessor Kelly Anderson, is leaving with sights set on serving a broader constituency. While Anderson was selected by Gov. Jan Brewer to serve on the Arizona Department of Transportation Board, Smith has announced his intent to run for the new county supervisor district that should encompass Maricopa and some of the surrounding area. The new building includes 28 classrooms that will allow Pathway to expand its enrollment from 640 students to 1,100 and eventually offer kindergarten through 12th grade traditional education, as well as a multipurpose room that will allow the school to serve its students hot lunches, host a variety of performances and act as the home court for some of the school’s athletic teams. The Children’s Action Alliance fact sheet showed that 24 percent — nearly one in four — babies born in Legislative District 23 were to mothers who did not have a high school diploma or GED. Twenty percent of adults over the age of 25 in the district do not have a high school diploma or GED, according to the report. In February, there were 775 total trips on the Maricopa Xpress, which made numerous weekday trips to and from various spots in the greater Phoenix area. In March, ridership climbed to 1,080 before falling back to 904 in April. For the COMET – the City of Maricopa Express Transit circulator shuttle – there were 96 trips in February, 137 in March and 138 in April.
