Eraring's deadliest catch
THE State Government should pump more money into Lake Macquarie to offset the massive fish kill that power generation causes, the city’s mayor and MP Greg Piper says.Eraring Power Station released yesterday the results of a study it financed, which confirmed the power station killed tens of thousands of fish a year.
Eraring said it would spend $100,000 over the next 12 months on programs to improve fish and larvae health in the lake, taking the utility’s total spending on research and marine habitat improvements to $600,000 since 2009.
The state-owned corporation’s latest annual report said it had paid more than $1billion in tax and dividends to the NSW Government in the past decade.
Community activist Alison Dunne said $600,000 was a ‘‘measly’’ amount given the power station’s ‘‘30 years of operation and cumulative air, land and water impacts on aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity’’.
Ms Dunne, a community representative at Eraring meetings, questioned why it had taken Eraring so long to ‘‘investigate and address its impacts’’ .
Eraring operations executive Jeff Hogan said $600,000 was ‘‘an appropriate amount at this point in time’’.
‘‘This is taxpayers’ money,’’ he said. ‘‘I’m here to run this power station and minimise the impacts on the community of Lake Macquarie as best as possible.’’
Cr Piper said Eraring “should always be looking to do more to reduce its environmental impact’’.
“They’re not going to close the power station, but the community expects them to do what they reasonably can to reduce their impact.’’
Cr Piper said the state government had benefited heavily in dividends and tax from power generation in Lake Macquarie and “the ongoing environmental impact on our area is disproportionate to the rest of the state’’.
“I think more should be put back to the area,” he said.
