Troubleshooting Mac OS X Lion's NAS Problems
There's been quite a kerfuffle among Network Attached Storage (NAS) users since the release of Apple OS X Lion. Not long after Lion's debut, revelations came out about authentication issues to NAS devices via Time Machine —Apple's native backup utility for OS X.
This issue was attributed to the fact that with the release of 10.7, Apple discontinued support for DHX authentication and implemented, in its place, DHX2 authentication. DHX is an Apple authentication protocol. The change from DHX to DHX2 is the result of upgrading Netatalk, the protocol used to connect Time Machine over AFP to a back-up volume or folder on a NAS. DHX2 is reported to be a more secure authentication method over DHX. Many users in trying to configure their NAS devices with Time Machine are receiving "server not supported" or other authentication errors, and cannot access previous Time Machine backups.
It seems as if NAS vendors did not make provisions for updated Netatalk in Lion. How and why this could come about, given that Lion developer code was available prior to final release, has been a source of debate in tech circles. One possible reason may be found on trick77.com's blog post : " the current Netatalk maintainer, NetAFP.com decided to make this important release closed source, only releasing it to customers who are paying for commercial support (looks like you're lucky if you own a Netgear or Drobo NAS!)."
Netgear has confirmed that if you are using an x86-based ReadyNAS system (Ultra 2/4/6 [Plus], Pro 2/4/6, Pro Pioneer, Pro Business, 1500, 2100, 3200, 4200), you'll need to update to RAIDiator 4.2.19-T4 beta . With this release, AFP and Time Machine will work just fine. If you choose not to update to the 4.2.19 beta, AFP access will still work, but Time Machine backups will fail. Users with ReadyNAS Duo and NV+ devices have the the RAIDiator 4.1.8-T5 beta firmware upgrade available.
Drobo is offering a utility called "Time Tamer" which configures Drobo NAS devices to work with OS X Lion's Time Machine.
