A round-up of today's other stories in brief

O'Brien named Ireland captain

CRICKET:  Kevin O’Brien has been named Ireland captain for next week’s rearranged opening Intercontinental Cup clash against Namibia at Stormont, with coach Phil Simmons set to have a look at some new faces in the absence of many of his county-based players, writes Emmet Riordan.

With William Porterfield in action for Warwickshire and Trent Johnston out with a knee injury, it will be the 27-year-old Gloucestershire all-rounder’s first time to skipper the side in a four-day game.

There are two uncapped players named in the 13, with Middlesex wicketkeeper Stuart Poynter joining his older brother Andrew in the senior squad for the first time.

IRELAND (squad v Namibia, Intercontinental Cup, September 6th-9th, Stormont, Belfast): K O’Brien (Gloucestershire, capt), A Cusack (Clontarf), G Dockrell (Somerset), P Eaglestone (Strabane), N Jones (Civil Service North), G McCarter (Gloucestershire), J Mooney (North County), A Poynter (Clontarf), S Poynter (Clontarf/MCCYC, wkts), P Stirling (Middlesex), A van der Merwe (YMCA), A White (Instonians), G Wilson (Surrey).

Wimbledon champion Kvitova exits in New York

TENNIS:  PETRA Kvitova became the first reigning Wimbledon champion to lose in the first round of the US Open in the Open era yesterday when she went down 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 to Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania.

The Czech has had a difficult time since beating Maria Sharapova in the final at the All England Club in July, winning only two matches, and she looked shaky from the start at Flushing Meadows.

In contrast, world number 49 Dulgheru played a very solid match and, after breaking Kvitova to lead 5-3 in the second set, she served out the victory to love.

In other matches, Germany’s Julia Goerges, the 19th seed, eased to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over compatriot Kristina Barrois, while 27th seed Lucie Safarova came from a set down to beat Magdalena Rybarikova 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Sailors Take On 'Extreme Cycling' in the Haute Route - SailJuice News

&Nbsp; As a full-time sailing journalist, I report on most of the sailing ‘Majors’, including the America’s Cup, the Olympic Games, the Volvo, and so on.

If you’re a keen racer yourself, and want to improve your skills and get better results on the race course, please take a look at www.SailJuice.com , which is packed full of tips and advice from some of the greatest sailors alive.

Along with www.TheDailySail.com editor James Boyd, I also run a marine media & copywriting agency, which you can find at www.sailingintelligence.com

You can find my articles in many of the racing-oriented sailing mags, including: Seahorse, Yachts & Yachting, Yachting World, Australian Sailing, Boat International, Sailing World.

Known for their achievements on board multihulls, monohulls and speed machines, a group from the world of professional sailing, are lesser known for their prowess on two-wheeled speed machines. This week the likes of Andrew Palfrey, Artemis Racing coach and Olympian, Mark Turner who heads up the Extreme Sailing Series, Extreme 40 and round the world sailor Fraser Brown and Paul Larsen – perhaps the most ‘extreme’ sailor out there as he chases the 60 knot speed record, are all competing in Europe’s highest and toughest cycling challenge…the Haute Route – a taste of what pro-riders do in the big Tours, day after day of huge calorie burns along with a good deal of pain and suffering! A surprising number of professional sailors have cycling as their alternative pursuit when they are on land – including French stars Franck Cammas and Thomas Coville, and Olympic and America’s Cup sailor Jochen SchumannThe first edition of the Haute Route has 300 riders competing as Solo, Duo or Team entries. Starting from Geneva and finishing in Nice, in total, they are pedaling more than 730km, over 15 famous Cols and grinding their way up over 17,000m of Alpine terrain; nearly twice the altitude of climbing Everest from sea level.
