Left handed? You may be rightly gifted
A quarter of the world's population – including this writer – are defined as sinister. Not because of our thoughts or actions but because of the hand we favour. That's right (see the bias at work?). The Latin 'dexter' (right) makes right-handers "dexterous" but 'sinister' (left) makes the rest of us evil.

The English language itself tilts heavily towards right. When you are having a good day, you probably woke up on the right side of the bed or are at the right place at the right time. To refer to the 'left' of things you'd have to look at 'counter' clockwise and if you wanted an alternative to the word lefty all you'd get is something going down i.e southpaw. Now you don't want to know that kefty, gallock-handed, chickie paws, butterfingered, handless, ham-fisted and scrammies are all other words that may describe you and me, the specially gifted ones. Well, Happy Left Hander's Day. Good day to find plenty of statistics to defend our lot. Left-handers are more likely to be geniuses because over 20% of all MENSA members are lefties. A study found that left-handed are, on average, 15% richer than right-handed of those who attended college, and 26% richer if they graduated. But the theory goes for a toss when you get to ground realities.
I have felt left out sitting for exams holding my clipboard high at right angles and writing the test on edge of the seat. Why? Because no one cared lefties needed desk space. Imagine using a right handed fountain pen that digs into the paper and gives no ink flow. As a teacher try checking a copy and the tick goes to the right. Even Nike just couldn't do it otherwise.
Try putting a pot roast in a microwave only to know the controls are on the right and even the door opens the wrong way. Always wondered why I just couldn't get the ice cream scoop out right.

It's a loaded question, but it has a purpose: to surprise students into thinking about etymology. In this case, I gave a quick lecture on the history of cultural bias against lefties contained in the word "sinister." (The Wikipedia entry on the linguistic history of left-handedness is a great place to start, although I'm surprised that " gauche " doesn't get a mention. You see, left-handers are also klutzes.
