How to give subcutaneous injections to your cat | Animal Central
Long term feline medical conditions including diabetes and allergies commonly require frequent injections of medications. Trips to their veterinarian on a frequent basis may not be cost effective and therefore many owners opt to learn to give the injections themselves in the comfort of their own home. Depending on the temperament of your cat, you may or may not need assistance restraining your cat. If assistance is required, we recommend having your veterinarian or their staff show you how to properly restrain your cat in order to avoid injury to you or your cat.
Check your cat’s medication for dosage instructions prior to administration. Dispense medication into the designated syringes provided by your veterinarian. Owners should remember that syringes for insulin are different than those given for the administration of other medications and are required for proper dosing. It is best to make certain that you are completely prepared to give the injection prior to bringing your cat in as many cats do not like to remain restrained for extended periods of time. Once your cat is adequately restrained, locate your intended injection site by gently pinching and lifting the skin to create a tent in the skin. Sites should be rotated in order to prevent your cat from becoming tender or sensitive to the injections being administered in a single location. Remove the cap from the syringe and grasp the syringe between your thumb and index finger making certain that the bevel (opening) of the needle is pointed upwards. Insert the needle into the skin to just above bevel level. Pull back slightly on the syringe plunger in order to determine that you have not inadvertently punctured a small vessel or gone through the opposite side of the skin tent. Slowly dispense the medication by depressing the plunger.Leopard Print Plunger - Bookshelf
