Irene delivers glancing blow to RI
-->PROVIDENCE –– Hurricane Irene sashayed past Rhode Island on Sunday, inflicting less damage than feared, but clubbing the rest of New England with furious wind and rain.
Millions had monitored Irene warily from day to day as it moseyed up the Eastern Seaboard. The huge storm surrendered its status as a full-fledged hurricane and took on tropical-storm trappings as the eye drove ashore at New York’s Coney Island, farther west than had been predicted for days.
Nevertheless, around 40 percent of Rhode Islanders lost power as wind gusts of hurricane strength levered trees out of the ground and hurled some of their branches javelin-like into an unholy embrace with utility lines.
Heavy rain struck central and western Massachusetts, the Associated Press said. The town of Burlington, Conn., appeared to have taken the most, with 7.45 inches. Rainfall in Rhode Island proved a patchwork affair.
Timothy F. Horan, president of National Grid for Rhode Island and New Hampshire, said 20 electricity substations — a third of Rhode Island’s total — fell victim to flying debris. A particular problem, he said, was the Newport feeder line, hit in 10 places. All of Aquidneck Island lost power at one point.
Horan said utility workers had to wait until Monday morning to tackle the problem, because it was too dangerous for them to seek out live wires in the dark. He said the hundreds of knocked-out traffic lights would be a priority.
In Foster, all four lanes of Route 6 were sealed for about two miles around 11 a.m. when a large tree pitched across the highway and dragged down several utility poles.
“I have no idea how long it’s going to be” before repairs can be made safely and the highway is reopened, said Police Chief Robert E. Coyne Jr.
Route 6 from Connecticut to Providence is an important secondary highway and a well-used commuter route.
