The multiplex screens are full of superheroes these days. But according to a series of stories in The Daily Advertiser last week, Acadiana don't have to buy a ticket to find a real hero. Among those recognized: Danielle Sonnier, a 4-foot-8 cashier at BJ's Pizza and Deli, who stopped a robbery by slamming a cash drawer on the hand of a knife-wielding would-be thief; Jacoby Henry, a 13-year-old with an especially serious form of muscular dystrophy, who donated an almost-new wheelchair to a girl with brittle bone disease; Kennen Granger, a Lafayette High senior who helped save the life of a football official felled by a heart attack during a game; Mark Perot, Avery Joseph and Charles "Chuck" Berry, who helped Randy Aucoin save his children from a submerged pickup; Debra Seibert, the Iota Middle principal who calmly talked down a former student who showed up at school with knives; and Jalisa Granger, who died of injuries after she successfully shielded her baby, Ty, during the Rayne tornado. What could possibly be less controversial than new electric and water meters? Yet some disgruntlement has attached itself to plans by Lafayette Utilities System to install "smart meters" capable of transmitting readings to the LUS office, which means the meter man won't have to come to your house anymore. A federal grant is financing the installation of such meters in several portions of Louisiana. About 1,000 homes in Lafayette, to be chosen by means yet to be announced, will also get in-house displays that will allow customers to monitor their utility usage. But some customers say they're concerned about letting LUS plug into information that might, say, tip strangers off about who's away on vacation. An LUS official acknowledged that a few customers have expressed doubts about the smart meters, and the City-Parish Council is considering a law that would let residential customers opt out of the smart meter system in favor of continued manual meter readings for a $12 fee.Manual Cash Drawers - News

Bourgeois employers are actually completely correct that it is not safe to trust someone with a prison record around their cash drawer--and also, it is actually going to create more crime if criminals have no hope of rehabilitation.
