Capital Region rocks to the beat of Virginia quake

The Capital Region felt the shaking effect of a reported 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Virginia that left desks and chairs quivering and chased people out of their homes and workplaces.
There were no reported injuries or significant damage to structures in the area. The damage appeared to be limited to cracks in plaster and trinkets knocked off walls and shelves.
"I am getting regular reports from agencies all over the state and at this time there are no reports of damage or power outages," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.
Phone lines on different networks were jammed Tuesday afternoon as millions of people on the Eastern Seaboard tried to contact others.
The earthquake was centered about 85 miles south of Washington, D.C., according to the U.S. Geological Service. The location is 400 miles from Albany.
Dede Cruz was at her home on Clinton Avenue in Albany when she heard rattling. She initially thought it was nearby construction but then she notice her television was lifting off its stand.
"I really thought I was losing my marbles," the 25-year-old Schenectady County Community College student said.
As the shaking continued, cracks opened in her apartment's plaster walls.
Like countless other region residents, Cruz ran out of her home.
A number of offices were evacuated.
Workers on the roof of the state Capitol building hustled down a five-story construction stairway. People streamed out of buildings downtown, including the Verizon building and Albany County Judicial Center.

Happy Canada Day to my fellow Canadian bloggers and readers! Today is our nation's birthday, and it makes me think of how much I love being Canadian and living in Canada. It also means I get the day off work - yet another reason to love Canada! However, despite our love and appreciation for this beautiful country, instead of joining in Canada Day festivities downtown or passing time on a patio somewhere, we have chosen to use the day to wash and sand our deck. Hopefully we'll have time later this weekend to stain it, too. Terribly exciting, isn't it? We power-washed the thing this morning at 8:30 a.m. - hopefully not too early for the neighbours - our bylaws say we can start doing noisy yard things at 7:00 a.m., but I feel like that would just be obnoxious. As we waited for it to dry before we started sanding, we took Oscar to the dog park to run around, because it's a beautiful day - perfect for big national celebrations! It was very warm out, and he even lay down for a rest a time or two, which is practically unheard of for this dog.
