Major League Baseball (MLB) Umpires Mark Wegner and Marvin Hudson visit St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital of Tampa on Thursday, August 17 to offer words of encouragement and distribute Build-A-Bear Workshop® stuffed animals to pediatric patients with cancer or blood disorders. The visit marks the fifth hospital-based event of the year for BLUE for Kids, Inc., a non-profit that Hudson co-founded for community outreach initiatives of professional baseball umpires.

“I look forward to meeting the children and families during my visit to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital” said Wegner. “Coping with cancer or a blood disorder is incredibly stressful on the entire family. Perhaps our visit may generate a few smiles and a diversion from the negativity surrounding a traumatic hospital experience.”

Up to 30 children of the hospital’s hematology/oncology clinic will receive a Build-A-Bear Workshop stuffed animal. Each furry friend is fitted with a Tiny Tees® shirt, a pair of khaki shorts, a Tampa Bay Devil Rays™ hat, and an official birth certificate. Mark and Marvin will also bring a supply of baseballs, bats, and photos.
