Nike faces allegations of worker abuse in Indonesia
September 8, 2011Global sportswear company Nike is facing new allegations of abuse and mistreatment of workers by its contract manufacturers in Asia. The latest claims refute the long-standing Nike and other high-end manufacturers of clothing and footwear they are improving the conditions of their outsourced operations sweat shops.
According to an Associated Press (AP) published in The Straits Times of Singapore in July, workers making Nike sneakers Converse brand in Indonesia supervisors said regularly abused physically and verbally abused them.Nike admits abuse occurred but stressed that there was little he could do to stop it.
The allegations centered on the plant Pou Chen Group Sukabumi, 100km from Jakarta, which started the production of Converse in 2007. The Associated Press has interviewed dozens of workers in March and April of this year. A supervisor told him a kick after a mistake by cutting rubber soles. "We are helpless," said the woman. "Our only choice is to stay and suffer, or to speak and be fired."
Nike products are made in about 1,000 factories worldwide.Often, competing brands are produced simultaneously from production lines in the same factories. Nike Indonesia is third base after China and Vietnam, with the outsourcing of 38 Nike factories employing 115,000 workers. Of these, 17 000 workers produce its line of Converse least four plants.
Pou Chen is located in a provincial town where the minimum wage is far below the national average. The 10 000 workers, mostly women belonging to the Taiwanese factory to 50 cents an hour, which is barely enough for food and barracks-style of the company hosting the majority are forced to use ."They are throwing shoes and other things to us," said a woman of 23 years in the division of embroidery. "They growl and slap us when they get angry ... It is part of our daily bread. " Other workers described being hit or scratched, a man until he bleeds. Some said they were dismissed after the filing of complaints.
