SEMS Meetings Should Help Industry Interpret Rules « PEC/Premier ...

A group of operators and contractors have been working quietly since early spring dissecting the SEMS rules and coming up with common approaches for the industry. The group, which has been under the umbrella of the Offshore Operators Committee and has lately also come under the new Center for Offshore Safety, has put in a lot of long hours and more than a little expertise. The need for their efforts is clear – unless the industry reaches consensus on the best way to approach SEMS, contractors will be pulled in several directions at once as they try to satisfy the different views of their customers. That is what happened back in the early ‘90s when the old Safety and Environmental Management Program (SEMP) was first promoted. Every operator had its own safety orientation program and safety questionnaire. Contractors found themselves sending their workers through the same training over and over and spending hours filling out nearly identical questionnaires. Side Note: That is how PEC first started. Industry asked us to develop standardized training and contractor safety questions. We have been doing it ever since.

Now the group is ready to unveil the results of its work. A series of meetings are planned for Houston, Lafayette and New Orleans between August 30 and September 1.
