Legendary Athletes Gang Up Against Cancer

Imagine a political conference with all the great leaders of the world. Now imagine that very same gathering with a selection of record-setting athletes and Hall of Famers. Where politics has the G8 summit, sports has the Harold Pump Foundation Dinner.

The 11th star-studded event took place in Century City, California, last week and featured the very demographic, along with stars of entertainment, the world of business, and politics. Going into this year, twins Dana and David Pump have raised $4.6 million to help fight cancer , the disease to which their father lost his fight in 1999. Each year, they honor inspirational people and their accomplishments.

This year was no different as Marcus Allen, Jerry West, and Oscar de la Hoya received Lifetime Achievement Awards, along with current Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn.

Being on the red carpet and interacting with these all-time greats is a fun and educational experience. Just getting to take a moment to slip inside the minds of these legends and see what makes them tick. Plus, you never know who is going to show up at this particular gala.

Larry King, ambles down, suspenders and all, with his wife, Shawn. He's been almost as visible in retirement as he was when he was hosting CNN's "Larry King Live."

What has he been up to? "I do Conan a lot," says Larry, leading his wife to chime in, "Are you kidding me?!" She's turns to her husband, with the mind of a public relations rep, "What are getting ready to do?" Then she turns back to me. "He's getting ready to make a huge announcement. He's been very busy."

Larry then adds the outlet that may be involved before his wife scolds him not to reveal anything. I promise to keep it in the vault and simply clarify, "You're getting ready to not be as ...leisurely?"

"Correct," he says succinctly. So we can expect more from him soon.

Amateur boxer and South Texas College student Isaac Torres was going to turn “pro” in a few weeks, but he decided to hold off for a little while longer and continue his education at STC this fall.

Torres, a Mission native, is one of the elite amateur boxers in the country and recently competed for a spot on the U.S. Olympic boxing team at the trials held in Mobile, Ala.

“It’s tough to get to that level. All the fighters are good at that level and each one had to earn their way; it’s the cream of the crop,” said Torres’ trainer James Gogue. “Just getting there was an accomplishment. No one in the Upper Valley had done that before.”

The 20-year-old’s prowess in the ring has turned some heads in the sport and is currently under the watchful eye of Oscar De la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions senior advisor, Don Chargin.

Although Torres loves the opportunity to turn pro, he wants to earn his degree in kinesiology. His parents and trainer agree with his decision.

“He wants to go pro, but I told him he has to go to school. I want him to finish his degree,” said Gogue. “He’s taking a full load right now. I don’t care how long it takes, he has to get his degree. It’s rewarding and that’s what I told Isaac, you have to go to school, and its part of my requirements in order to train and manage them.”

“That’s one of the things I worry about them. There is life after boxing. You only do this for a limited time,” he added. “I don’t care how long it takes, they need something to fall back on.”

During his amateur boxing career, Torres has posted a 202-23 record and won 14 national tournaments and four international competitions. He is ranked No. 1 in the nation at 119 pounds. For the Olympic trials, Torres was ranked No. 6 because his weight category was eliminated and he had to fight at 123 pounds.

“A lot of trainers have told me to turn pro, but the main thing I like about James is that he tells me to go to school and I have to do that, and my mom tells me that too,” said Torres. “You don’t want to rely on boxing, you want to rely on your brains.
