'Secret Circle' has familiar ring

The CW adds to its heavy occult programming with "The Secret Circle" (21:00, TV-14). For all the emphasis on fate and hidden surprises incendiary, "Circle" feels decidedly generic.

"Secret" begins as pretty teen Cassie Blake (Britt Robertson) is left with a flat tire alongside a road and decides to call his mother. Cassie is in trouble? Danger comes in the form of an unknown and frightening visits not Cassie, but her single mother, filling her house with flames and mysterious relegated to a painful death that Cassie believes the latest to be accidental.

Fast forward a month and the orphan girl was exiled to old hometown of his mother, a picturesque place called Chance Harbor, Washington, which resembles the definition of "Haven."

Cassie grandmother Jane (Ashley Crow) seems nice enough, but Cassie reminded why his mother never spoke much of the old town. And gosh, being the new girl in school is tough, especially when everyone is as beautiful as Cassie.

But just as "Secret" begins to resemble another CW drama as Tommy Hilfiger fashion shoot, we discover that Cassie has been pulled back by the fate of a town full of witches. And may be the missing piece that could transform the coven (or other) into something more powerful.

"Secret" suffers not only a plot very, very familiar, but a driver who is consuming what seems like years to reveal the obvious. It's hard to be shocking and scary when it's so boring.

The best, or at least forgettable, the character is Faye (Phoebe Tonkin), the girl with dark hair means the school, a witch with little patience for her classmates attitude "kindness and deference to the new come. I can sympathize with his desire to speed things up. With any luck, it could emerge as the fox news of the CW, Shannen Doherty one for the 21st century.
