Restaurant news from Mohegan Sun, Whistling Swan, Bistro Les Gras
With over 30,000 college students, many with parents in tow, flocking back to Hampshire County's Five College region over Labor Day weekend, it's a great time to consider heading elsewhere for dinner out. Restaurants in Amherst and Northampton will be busy the next four or five days, and traffic will be exceptionally heavy in and around both communities. Savvy diners might, therefore, consider visiting some of downtown Springfield's best, or perhaps patronizing some of the noteworthy dining destinations in Westfield, West Springfield, and other Hampden County locales.
Those resolutely Northampton-bound should make advance reservations whenever possible-- walking in without one will most likely guarantee a "wait."
Greenfield-based Comical Mystery Tour is returning to the Munich Haus in Chicopee this month. A dinner theater production of "A Timely Murder" is scheduled for September 9; the whodunit spoof includes optional audience participation.
"A Timely Murder" is themed around the upcoming autumn equinox, and prizes will be given to those who help solve the "crime."
The following week, on September 16, the Munich Haus will be hosting a Comedy Show featuring four "stand-up" professionals. Chef Daniel Martinez of Bistro Les Gras in Northampton is planning his Third Annual Locavore Dinner.
Scheduled for September 11, the meal is to be prepared from Pioneer Valley products exclusively. Chef Martinez pledges that only the salt and pepper used will be from outside the area.
The menu will include six wines and seven courses. Because of the local sourcing limitations Martinez has imposed upon himself, the menu won't be available until a few days before the event, at which time Martinez will know what's available and at its seasonal peak. Mohegan Sun's own Birches Bar & Grill is prepared to dish up a complete meal that will include soup or salad, a choice from four different entrees, and dessert, all for $25.

Wines from California-based Five Rivers Winery will be featured in the dinner's five-course menu. Two entrees, grilled maple turkey and shrimp teriyaki, will be part of the lineup. The event begins at 5:30 pm, and tickets are $50 per person.
