Fresh from the Farmers' Market - Apples and cabbage: The taste of fall
Well, officially, a few weeks of summer. But in our eyes watching the first round of the color of maple trees, our nose smells much net mixing with cooler temperatures in the smoke of campfires in the garden and wood stoves and our ears hear honking of Canada geese and the last of the loons, the fall began in the Northwoods.
Add a fourth meaning to these indicators of autumn flavor.
The taste of fresh apple crisp and tart of the tree, or melt-in-your-mouth tender, cinnamon-laced in a pie, applesauce or apple butter.
And taste of cabbage, enclosing Sarmas savory, tangy and bright as sauerkraut, crisp and refreshing slaw and salads.
Both grow very well in our northern climate, the two have been staples of history many of our immigrant ancestors, and both are packed with vitamins and antioxidants.
When the Mayflower landed, the first British governor of Massachusetts planted apple trees in an orchard that lies at the foot of the lighthouse in Boston.
Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch governor of New Amsterdam, modern New York, grew up in an apple orchard which later became the notorious Bowery. He said he grafted apple first real American here in 1647. This historic tree, still bearing fruit, was hit by a car train derailed in 1866.
Apples have been growing in Minnesota for good since the 1870s, with a lot of credit because of Peter Gideon, who has tested thousands of seedlings on his property near Excelsior.Horace Greely attempt to prove wrong (he warned an audience in 1860 not to go to Minnesota as it was impossible to grow apples), Gideon has created the grandmother of all Minnesota commercial apples, rich in 1868 . Named after his wife, the rich apples influenced directly or indirectly as Haralson, State Fair, Honeycrisp, and the U of M SweeTango latest sensation.
Local producers Ralph and Amy Fideldy have several of these varieties in their orchard Cohasset.Even as a kid, Ralph wants to grow apples, but his mother, like Greely, do not think you can successfully develop an orchard on their Blackberry Farm.

Sam Hawken » [REVIEW] The Wild Geese
It would not be much of a movie if it was just the three leads all the time, so some interesting roles support functions, such as Hardy Krüger Pieter Coetzee, a South African mercenary rooted in the culture of apartheid but not necessarily convinced of its correctness. I do not know if the soft edges of his character are to placate South Africa, where the wild geese was filmed, but whatever the case, it is an intriguing subplot after the ousted president of Africa is saved.
The Wild Geese runs 134 minutes and is quite relaxed, pace wise in the early rounds. It takes some time for various mercenaries to be pulled in and there is a sequence of learning that is lively and humorous experience as a sergeant major (Jack Watson) is recruits in Hell in the preparation of what is going to be a rescue operation closely regimented against a numerically superior force deep into enemy territory.
I spoil anything by telling you that things do not go according to plan and the last half of the film is a series of calamities that only a desperate action can challenge. One of the things that contrasts with The Wild Geese The Dogs of War is that if things go wrong during the mission. By contrast, Christopher Walken mercenaries have a good old-fashioned cake. All the more opportunities to pile on the action and shooting tough guys, though, and I'm perfectly happy with that.
Though Roger Moore was James Bond Thurs deep into at the time of The Wild Geese, Richard Burton and Richard Harris were not exactly what you call strong action hero, what with their reputation for drinking and living difficult. They are surprisingly good in their roles, however, and I think I bought them as mercenaries with specialized skills essential to the completion of the mission. Nobody goes to the error of Faulkner Burton Rambo, but it is not bad at all as a soldier in his 50s still trying to do the job the best he can. Harris character may suffer because it is not that much screen time, but he made good use of what he gets exposure. Rafer Janders is a friendly, smart guy.
